With the holiday season comes a lot of traveling, parties, gift giving, and of course- eating. Most people let their diets slip this time of year and pick it back up in January. While it may be okay to go a few weeks without visiting the gym as often, it’s never okay to ignore your dental hygiene. You don’t have to miss out on all the fun though, just keep a few simple tips in mind:

#1 Be cautious of candy canes. Hard candy is tasty and seems like it’s everywhere during the holidays. Candy canes, peppermints, and other hard candy can crack your teeth if you bite down wrong. You don’t have to forgo them all together but eat them sparingly and be sure to brush thoroughly after eating candy of any kind.

#2 Try to drink as much water as possible. Watch out for both soda and wine. Holiday parties are rife with both and neither one is good for your teeth. If you want something bubbly, try fizzy water rather than soda. If you must drink soda, use a straw to keep most of the acid off your teeth. If you like wine, remember that red can stain your teeth. White wine is less of a risk to your white smile. Like with hard candy, be sure to brush well if you do indulge.

#3 Eat your veggies (and meat!) Not all the food at your holiday parties are bad for you. At events, skip the trays of cookies and instead fill your plate with veggies. Broccoli and carrots are great treats for your teeth because they’re loaded with Vitamin A to strengthen your enamel. Another holiday food that’s great for your teeth is turkey. It’s a great source of phosphorus and protein, both of which can help your teeth strong and healthy.

#4 Don’t use your teeth as a tool. Don’t crack nuts with your teeth. The hard surface of most nutshells can cause serious tooth and gum damage, and may even crack teeth. As well, don’t use your teeth to open the holiday packages. You may be tempted to break open or cut plastic toy wrapping with your teeth, but don’t don’t do it!

#5. Bring a toothbrush, floss, and mouthwash with you. If you plan on traveling at all, even if it’s just overnight, don’t leave your hygiene behind. Many stores sell a dental travel kit that’s perfect to take along without taking up too much space.

The holidays don’t have to be a time to ruin the health you’ve worked for all year. You can still enjoy your parties and travel, just be sure to choose your food and drink carefully and brush afterward.
